Making spelling practice playful
Build confidence with words, clues and everyday reading.
Variety can help children enjoy spelling practice. Begin with a small group of age-appropriate words and return to them in different ways.
- Clue first: describe a word without saying it, then ask the child to write it.
- Missing letters: remove one or two letters and let the child complete the word.
- Say, cover, write, check: look carefully at a word, hide it, write it and compare.
- Word detective: spot the word in a story or on a sign.
- Celebrate effort: review errors kindly and retry later.
